  • PRODUCT INFORMATION

    Jamaican Gizzada or Gizzarda, also referred to as pinch-me-round, and known as Guizada in the Portuguese language, is a pastry in Jamaican and Portuguese cuisine. The tart is contained in a small, crisp pastry shell with a pinched crust and filled with a sweet and spiced coconut filling.

     

    Gizzada may be of Jamaican origin or adapted from Portuguese cuisine. Golden crisp pastry shell, pinched crust; filled with caramelized ginger grated coconut meat filling.

  • RECIPE CARD

    Gizzarda is also a popular Jamaican coconut pastry treat that is loved by both locals and Caribbean vacationers. It has a smooth yet crunchy outer crust while having a soft, sweet, and chewy center. 

     

    INGREDIENTS:

    Fillings:

    11/2 cups water

    2 cups grated coconut 

    2 cups brown sugar

    1 tsp bedessee vanilla extract

    1 oz. butter/margarine

    1 tsp grated fresh ginger root

    1/2 tsp salt

     

    Crust:

    2 cups all-purpose flour

    1 cup of cold water

    1 tbsp butter

    1/2 tsp salt

     

    Filling instruction:

    1. Bring water to boil and then add grated coconut
    2. Allow to cook for approximately 5 minutes and then add brown sugar, vanilla extract, butter, salt, and grated ginger root.
    3. Allow mixture to cook on low heat while stirring constantly.
    4. The mixture is ready when it becomes slightly thick and syrupy.

     

    Crust instruction: 

    1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
    2. While mixture for filling cooks combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a mixing bowl.
    3. Add water gradually and knead until it forms a dough. The dough should be smooth and easy to form, not sticky.
    4. Roll dough out onto a floured surface and use a rolling pin.
    5. Use a 4-inch diameter circular dough cutter to make circles. Choose the size you prefer. 
    6. Use your fingers to crimp the edges of your circles until it forms a shallow cup.
    7. Carefully spoon your cooked coconut mixture into your pastry cups without overfilling. Gently flatten the top.  
    8. Place on a grease baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. 
    9. Using a pastry brush, lightly glaze coconut filling with melted butter.
    10. Bake for an additional 5 minutes until it is lightly browned.

     

    *Cool and serve. Store in an airtight container.
